30 Short Bible Verses That Are Easy to Memorise
Not every Bible verse worth knowing is long. Some of the most powerful are just a handful of words — short enough to memorise in a single reading, and easy to carry through a hard day. Short verses are ideal for children learning their first Scripture, for cards and messages, and for anyone who has struggled to memorise longer passages.
Here are thirty short Bible verses, grouped by theme, from the World English Bible. Most are a single line. Pick one that speaks to where you are, and make it yours this week.
Short verses about God’s love
- 1 John 4:8 — “God is love.”
- 1 John 4:19 — “We love him, because he first loved us.”
- Psalm 136:1 — “Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.”
- John 3:16 — short enough to learn, deep enough for a lifetime.
- Romans 8:38-39 — “Neither death, nor life… will be able to separate us from God’s love.”
Three words — “God is love” — may be the shortest summary of the Bible’s message. It is a good first verse for a child, and a good last one for anyone.
Short verses for fear and anxiety
- Psalm 56:3 — “When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.”
- Isaiah 41:10 — “Don’t be afraid, for I am with you.”
- Psalm 23:1 — “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall lack nothing.”
- John 14:27 — “Don’t let your heart be troubled.”
- 1 Peter 5:7 — “Cast all your worries on him, because he cares for you.”
Psalm 56:3 is one of the best verses to memorise first. It is honest about fear and gives it somewhere to go in a single breath.
Short verses for strength and courage
- Philippians 4:13 — “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.”
- Joshua 1:9 — “Be strong and courageous… the LORD your God is with you.”
- Psalm 46:1 — “God is our refuge and strength.”
- Isaiah 12:2 — “Behold, God is my salvation. I will trust, and will not be afraid.”
- 2 Timothy 1:7 — “God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.”
Short verses for hope and joy
- 1 Thessalonians 5:16 — “Rejoice always.”
- Psalm 118:24 — “This is the day that the LORD has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.”
- Romans 15:13 — “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace.”
- Psalm 28:7 — “The LORD is my strength and my shield.”
- Nehemiah 8:10 — “The joy of the LORD is your strength.”
“Rejoice always” is two words, and one of the most quietly challenging instructions in the Bible — a good verse to memorise and wrestle with.
Short verses for faith and trust
- Proverbs 3:5 — “Trust in the LORD with all your heart.”
- Hebrews 11:1 — “Faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen.”
- 2 Corinthians 5:7 — “We walk by faith, not by sight.”
- Mark 9:23 — “All things are possible to him who believes.”
- Psalm 37:5 — “Commit your way to the LORD. Trust in him, and he will do it.”
Short verses for prayer and rest
- 1 Thessalonians 5:17 — “Pray without ceasing.”
- Matthew 11:28 — “Come to me… and I will give you rest.”
- Psalm 46:10 — “Be still, and know that I am God.”
- Philippians 4:6 — “In nothing be anxious… let your requests be made known to God.”
- John 11:35 — “Jesus wept.” (The shortest verse in the Bible — and a reminder that God enters our grief.)
Why short verses are worth learning
Short verses have an advantage longer ones do not: you can carry them everywhere, recall them instantly, and pray them without a Bible in hand. “Be still, and know that I am God” is enough to steady an anxious moment. “God is love” is enough to anchor a child’s whole understanding of faith.
If you have never memorised Scripture before, short verses are the place to start. Choose one from the theme you need most, read it aloud a few times today, and glance at it tomorrow. By the end of the week it will be yours — and the next one will come more easily.
